Drivers northbound on White Rock's George Street will soon have only one direction to turn when they hit the intersection at North Bluff Road.
Director of engineering Greg St. Louis told Peace Arch News a triangle-shaped traffic island is to be installed at the site this month to prevent drivers from turning west onto the busy thoroughfare.
The practice in recent years has resulted in several collisions, he said.
"There's been 12 crashes in the last five years," St. Louis said, citing ICBC statistics for 2007 to 2011.
A serious collision occurred there last month, when the driver of a Ford Explorer attempted to make just such a left turn. His vehicle was T-boned by a Toyota 4Runner, and emergency crews had to use the jaws of life to extract him.
Police blamed distracted driving for the crash, noting the Ford driver was talking on a cellphone when the collision occurred.
St. Louis said ICBC officials have identified the site as a "high traffic incident occurrence." The corporation will be footing the full cost of the island work, estimated at $12,000, he added.
