Integrated Homicide Investigation Team spokesperson Staff Sgt. Jennifer Pound addresses the media at the scene in Surrey where a woman was found murdered in her home on Sunday.

Update: Husband charged in death of woman killed in Newton home

Harbans Pandher is in custody in connection with a suspected domestic homicide in Surrey.

A woman is dead and her husband is in police custody in an apparent domestic homicide in east Newton over the weekend.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is investigating the death of a woman who was killed in a home in the 6900-block of 152 Street on Sunday, Nov. 23.

The victim, a 64-year-old woman was found unresponsive at about 1 p.m. Her husband, Harbans Pandher, also in his 60s, was arrested at the scene.

Pandher has since been charged with second-degree murder of his wife.

IHIT spokesperson Jennifer Pound said the woman and her husband are not known to police.

“I can tell you at this point the motive is unclear,” Pound said Monday. “It appears to be domestic, and that’s all we know at this stage.”

Neighbours told CBC News the home was occupied by a large extended family.

IHIT is an integrated team of homicide investigators from the RCMP and the Abbotsford and New Westminster police departments. It is responsible for investigating homicides, high-risk missing persons cases and suspicious deaths.

More details to come as they become available.
