A man is in custody following an assault that police mistakenly believed was a shooting in Surrey this afternoon.

Surrey RCMP say at about 1:30 p.m., they received reports of a man threatening a woman with a gun in a home near 128 Street and 100 Avenue.

When officers arrived, they found a woman injured inside the house. She was taken to hospital in serious condition and police have now determined she was assaulted, not shot.

A man fled the scene on foot but was subsequently arrested.

As of Monday afternoon, Mounties continued canvassing the neighbourhood and speaking with witnesses.

Though early in the investigation, police believe the man and woman know each other.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 604-599-0502 or, if they wish to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or www.solvecrime.ca
