B.C. billionaire Jim Pattison has donated $75 million to St. Paul’s Hospital for the creation of a new medical centre.

It’s the largest donation in history by a private citizen to a single medical facility, the hospital foundation announced Tuesday.

The centre will "enable close collaboration among clinicians and researchers to collectively drive new standards in health care," Pattison said in a release.

It will be built on 18 acres of land, located on Station Street near Terminal Avenue, and will include St. Paul’s new hospital, acute and critical care programs, the B.C. Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, and more.

The new hospital is expected to be complete by 2023, according to the foundation, and construction is set to begin this year.

"Our patients’ care experience will be greatly improved,” said Dr. Jeff Pike, director of clinical planning for the new project.

“They’ll be supported from hospital to community to home – receiving the right care, at the right time, at the right place."
