Heavily armed police surrounded a White Rock residence Saturday afternoon, following a report of a man and a gun in a Columbia Avenue home.

The standoff, in the 15400-block, closed the hillside roadway for more than two hours while officers dealt with the situation.

According to Const. Chantal Sears, police were alerted to "a potentially dangerous situation" at a residence just before 4 p.m. April 9. One report came from the inside the residence itself, she said.

Several general-duty officers – along with the emergency response team and police dog services – responded to the scene, where it was determined that a lone male suspect was barricaded in the house.

"When police showed up, the complainant had fled… to a neighbour's residence," Sears said.

Nearby residents told Peace Arch News they counted 17 RCMP vehicles on Columbia Avenue.

Erika Johanson said she could hear police on a megaphone telling someone to "come out with your hands up," followed by two loud bangs.

Sears said after "numerous attempts" to speak with the man, the emergency response team deployed two flash grenades; non-lethal explosives that produce a blinding flash of light and intense bang, causing temporary disorientation.

"The team entered the residence and located the male hiding inside and he was taken into custody," Sears said.

The man was taken by ambulance to Peace Arch Hospital for treatment of minor dog-bite injuries and then transported to the White Rock RCMP detachment.

Sgt. Joel Glen said Monday that a 41-year-old Surrey resident was arrested in connection with the standoff. He was released from custody Sunday, with conditions. Investigation is ongoing and no charges have been laid, Glen added.

Johanson said traffic was moving through Columbia Avenue again by shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday.
