Alec was born in Tartu, Estonia. When his father, a Captain of the Estonian Freedom Fighters was killed during an invasion in 1944 from the Russian and German armies during the 2nd World war, the family fled their homeland. Their adventure to safety took many paths and several years, but he and his family finally arrived in Canada in 1949 and they began their Canadian lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Alec graduated in 1964 as a Chartered Accountant from the University of Manitoba while articling with the MacDonald Currie Company. It was while working here that he met Joyce Erhardt, his wife of 52 years. They married in 1965. Alec left public practice and moved to a role within The T. Eaton Co. for 14 years. He was subsequently hired for the position of Controller of Planning and Budgets at Winnipeg's Health Sciences Centre.
With over 18 years of dedicated service, Alec culminated his career in 1999 as the Vice President of Finance. He was admired for his wisdom, patience and mentorship. The family thanks his secretary, Shannon Wark, who made the difficult times easier.
In 2002 Alec and Joyce moved to White Rock, BC, where they enjoyed a relaxing life style, learned to golf, long walks along the ocean, meeting many new friends, and especially the warmer climate. They began travelling and have wonderful memories of many beautiful vacations in Hawaii, California and Mexico.
Alec suffered bravely for 6 months with many cancer related health concerns but died peacefully in the Hospice Ward at Peace Arch Hospital in White Rock, BC.
Our Beloved husband, father, and grandfather, was a man of quiet dignity and humour. He was loyal, trustworthy, kind, and caring. He was happy to know at the end, that he could leave us having taught his family all these lessons that we carry with us in our lives, both personal and professional. We all love him "to the moon and back" and he will be greatly missed.
Alec is predeceased by: his Grandmother Johanna Mikk, his Mother, Felicia Parlin, and Aunt, Hilja Sonya. Alec is survived by his wife Joyce, his children Tamara Wells (John) and grandsons Joshua and Matthew in Winnipeg and his son Kevin Parlin (Lisa) in Vancouver. Also his sister, Tina Chorley (Bob) and their children, Alex and Lisa; Cousin Dorothy Sonya and her children, Eryka and Emma; and Cousin Cathy Kopec and husband Erol Weston and their children, Teigan, Lauren, and Kyra. And, his special brother-in-law Gib and wife Louise Erhardt.
Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday August 20th at 1:30 pm at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, 2350 - 148th St. in South Surrey.
