January 3, 1932 - January 8, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, Areta Lorean Evans on January 8, 2025, age 93, in Surrey, B.C. Born January 3, 1932 in Flin Flon, Manitoba to George Wellington Evans and Myrtle Jean Evans (nee Calvert), sister to Harvey Evans (d. 2008, Darlene d.2009) and Doug Evans (Lucille).

She was an avid figure skater in her youth, who recalled many early mornings trekking to the rink through the snow, in -20 and below weather. Her love of the North remained with her throughout her life.

She trained at the Winnipeg General Hospital to become a nurse and went on to a career in Public Health, starting out in Portage La Prairie and eventually moving to White Rock in the mid-60s.

She first worked at the Boundary Health Unit, which included the duties of school nurse to the outlying elementary schools of the area and then went on to spend the next 25 years at the Richmond Public Health Unit. She played an active role in Parents in Crisis, Indigenous bringing-together-of-community, and was awarded for her work on Fetal Alcohol and Fetal Affects Syndrome Education in the 1980s.

She had many good friends and enjoyed travelling abroad including Mexico, Greece, Turkey, much of Europe, and summers at Kakagi Lake, Ont. She loved pottery, music, reading, a glass of wine and above all spending time with family.

She is lovingly remembered by her three children, David McVicar, Ryan McKenzie, and Remy McKenzie (David Putman), as well as her two grandchildren, Lorne and Sabrina Putman.
