L. Catherine


Loving wife of Harold and devoted mother of Jennifer, Alison (Elliot Selick), Robert (Frances Wen), Erin, and John, died in Surrey, BC on October 4th, 2008, at the age of 80 years. Born and raised in rural Saskatchewan as the youngest girl of seven children, Catherine moved to Thunder Bay (Fort William) upon her marriage in 1953. In addition to raising five children, she had a variety of occupations and interests, most in service to the community. In earlier years, she was secretary to the Saskatchewan Provincial Architect, the Saskatchewan Motor League, and the Director of Nursing at Thunder Bay's McKellar General Hospital. She was later secretary to the Thunder Bay Big Brother Association, and was Co- ordinator of Volunteers for the Volunteer Centre of Thunder Bay. She was a 9-year executive member of the Memorial Society of Thunder Bay, an executive member of the Northwestern Ontario Women's Credit Union, and a member of the Northern Women's Centre, the Lakehead Social Planning Council, and the Lakehead Unitarian Fellowship. She was also Coordinator of the Lakehead Meals on Wheels from 1981 to 1994. On retiring to Surrey in 1995, she served as Membership Coordinator for the South Fraser Unitarian Fellowship until 2005, and was an active member of the White Rock Traditional Jazz Society for over 10 years. Catherine is survived by, in addition to her children and their spouses, sisters Alice Deck, Regina, SK, and Emma McClelland, Sault Ste Marie, ON, brothers Richmond, Langley, BC, Frank, Melfort, SK, and Sydney, Transcona, MN, many nieces and nephews, and three grandchildren: Alan, Carolyn, and Stephanie. Her warm smile, independent spirit, and earthy practicality will be missed by all who knew her. A memorial service will be held at 2 pm, Sunday, November 2nd at the Newton Seniors Centre, 13775 - 70 Ave, Surrey, BC. Flowers gratefully declined.
