It is with deep sadness and much love we mourn the passing of David Woodley of White Rock, British Columbia on Sunday, May 7, at age 76. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at Peace Arch Hospital at 1 a.m., plenty of time to meet the love of his life, wife Margaret, for a cruise, either in the Beaumont or sailboat, the following morning.
David will be lovingly remembered by his children: Kevin and wife Stephanie, Jordan and wife Teresa; grandchildren: Madelyn, David, Olivia and Morgan; sister Betty-Jayne Cocking and husband Bob, sister-in-law Linda, sister-in-law Joan and husband Barry, and sister-in-law Diana and husband Murdoch, and countless relatives and friends from work, sailing and car clubs.
David was predeceased by Margaret by 10.5 months after 52 years of marriage, and by his parents, Ada and Albert Woodley, as well as his brothers Warner, Blair and Glenn.
Born and raised on Vancouver Island, work took David and Margaret on family adventures from Whitehorse, Y.T., to Langley, Parksville, and Kelowna before settling in South Surrey. From those early days consulting up north to retirement as a Vice President, Human Resources and retired life on Strata Council, David took good care of the people he worked with, building relationships that remained strong through his final days. He built even stronger relationships with his sons, through a passion for sports with Kevin and cars with Jordan, never wavering in support and pride when both chose those fields for careers. He was also a devoted grandpa, never missing a music concert, dance recital, baseball game, volleyball tournament or cheer competition.
Forced to retire early by Leukemia, David learned to sail with Margaret, continuing those early adventures up north with trips together on RShack Island that took them all over the east coast of Vancouver Island from Victoria to Port McNeil. His love for speed, which started with Soap Box racing, continued with a bright-red Golf R sleeper that was a hard-to-miss staple on the roads of White Rock, with a seemingly constant fresh coat of wax and the deep-throated growl of a 450-horsepower engine he still loved to open up when opportunity arose.
A memorial will be held on Thursday, May 18, 2023, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at Harvard Gardens Rowing Club (15100 -33 Avenue, Surrey, B.C. V3S 0L3). Additional parking is available across the street by the Keg (15180 - 32nd Avenue, Surrey, B.C.), a short walk to the Rowing Club. In lieu of Flowers, donations can be made in David's name to the Canadian Cancer Society.
