PETER, DOROTHEA. APRIL 13, 1923 - JANUARY 23, 2014. Dorothea Jean (Tuck) Peter was born April 13, 1923 on her family’s dairy farm in Grey Township, Huron County, Ontario. Her early childhood experiences on the farm gave her a life-long love for animals and nature. When she was ten years old – over a terrible 8-month period – the barn burned, and both her grandmother Catherine (Schwendiman) Tuck and her mother Alice (Griffin) Tuck died. Dorothea’s father Fred Tuck remarried in 1934. Sadly, the farm was lost soon after, and Fred had to travel to find work for several years. Dorothea’s teenage years were spent in the care of her aunts and uncles during this period. Her father eventually relocated to Haileybury, and it was there that Dorothea met her future husband Robert Peter. After high school, Dorothea worked in Toronto and later in Brantford, until she joined the Canadian Women’s Army Corps in 1943. She was posted to Camp Borden. When WWII ended in 1945, Bob Peter returned from four years with the army in Europe. Dorothea obtained a discharge and the two were married. Dorothea and Bob lived in Timmins in their early years together, where Bob worked in mining. They had two daughters in Timmins, Susan and Elizabeth, and then moved to South Porcupine where son Ian was born. Dorothea and Bob moved for work many times – to Elliot Lake, ON; Toquepala, Peru; Guelph, ON; Matagami, QC; and Bowmanville, ON. They lost their oldest daughter Susan in a tragic plane crash in Matagami in 1967. When Bob retired in 1986, they moved to White Rock, BC, and after Bob’s death in 1994, Dorothea moved to Thunder Bay, ON to be with her grandchildren. By 2009, Thunder Bay winters were becoming too much for her, so she returned to the milder climate of White Rock, and lived there until she passed away on January 23, 2014 with her family by her side, after a brief struggle with cancer. Despite time, distance, and in later years a hand tremor that prevented her from writing, Dorothea maintained a wide network of family and friends that she cared for deeply. She was a loving mother and grandmother. As the family historian, she kept alive a rich written and oral history of our family tree. She loved horses, good food, reading, walking outdoors, and music. A talented and creative individual, she was a good painter and wonderful cook. Dorothea was a devout Anglican, active in the church wherever she lived. She never outgrew her farming roots. She is survived by her sister Nancy McColl (Campbellford, ON), cousin Lloyd Saunders (Mississauga, ON), daughter Elizabeth Peter and son-in-law David Dyer (White Rock, BC), son Ian Peter and daughter-in-law Kathy Thomas (Chilliwack, BC), grandson Graham Peter (Chilliwack, BC), grandson Russell Peter and wife Meghan McAughey (Winnipeg, MB), nieces Jackie Cullion (Windsor, ON) and Arlene Dowdall (Frankford, ON), and nephew Daryl McColl (Campbellford, ON). Cremation has taken place, and a celebration of her life is scheduled on her birthday at Elizabeth’s in White Rock. She will be buried with her beloved Tuck family in Clifford, ON. Donations in Dorothea’s memory may be made to the Anglican Church Council of the North, the BC Cancer Foundation or the Thunder Bay and District Humane Society.
