COATES, Frederick (1921-2007)

It is with deep sadness that Fred's family announces his passing on Thursday, May 31, 2007, at the age of 86.

He was predeceased by his brother, Ted, his sister, Mary, and his first wife, Martha.

He is survived by his wife, Reta, his children Margaret (Lorne) Appleton of White Rock, Bill (Terry) Coates of Edmonton, his step-children Bernie (Varya) Gillham of Gibsons, BC, and Rita Mary (Michael) Taenzer of Penticton and his grandchildren, Jeremy and Matthew Appleton, and step-grandchildren, Alleris and Carly Gilham, as well as many other family members and friends.

Fred was born and raised in England. He trained as an RAF Lancaster bomber pilot in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan where he met his first wife, Martha. They married in England and returned to Canada in 1948. Fred went on to become a CP Police Inspector until his retirement to White Rock in 1986. He and his second wife, Reta, married in 1989 and have spent their retirement years traveling and enjoying family.

Fred will be remembered as a loving father, husband, and grandfather. He had a wonderful sense of humour and a strong spirit that will be greatly missed by all those who loved him.

In his honour, there was a gathering to celebrate his life. A memorial will be held at a later date.

The family thanks Dr. Glenn Anderson and all the medical professionals at the Peace Arch Hospital who cared for Fred.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the BC Heart and Stroke Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
