Hank (Albert Hanford) McBride

January 26, 1927 – February 28, 2017

It is with great sadness, we announce the passing of Capt. Hank (Hanford) McBride at the age of 90. He will be greatly missed by his family, daughter Gail McBride (Ben), son Bert (Julie), grandchildren Stephanie (McBride) Quinn (Will), Martin, and Alayna McBride, brother Michael, sister Sharon Newton, other relatives, and many friends and shipmates. He is predeceased by his wife of 54 years - Ruth (Lundberg) McBride and his parents Albert A. McBride and Annes V. (Mills) McBride. Hank was actively involved in the commercial fishing industry for over 60 years and was one of the most highly respected captains in the industry, receiving many honours and awards for his contributions to the maritime industry. Growing up on a farm in Mud Bay (Surrey), BC, he went on his first fishing trip at 10 years old and was smitten by the sea. At the age of 21 and over his life until 1996, Hank went on to be the captain and owner of four deep-sea trawlers - Sharon M, and 3 other ships, all named Gail Bernice. He held a Fishing Master Unlimited for any size Canadian fishing vessel worldwide. Hank was a risk taker, an adventurer and an innovator - pioneering a number of innovations in the trawl fishery and consulting in Canada and internationally. He was a top producer for BC Packers and other companies for many years on the BC and Atlantic Coasts. His love of fishing, his mentorship of young skippers, his loyalty, honesty, and sharing of knowledge benefitted many. In turn, he had many good friends who also helped him over the years. Hank was generous, charming and kind and he loved a party. He was truly a “character” and a master storyteller who loved to laugh. He had a keen interest in history and geopolitics. Nothing mattered more to Hank than his family. He was so proud of Ruth, the love of his life, his children and grandchildren. He was keenly interested in everything and supported his family through all their adventures. In the last few years, his caregivers became an integral part of his family and were very important to him. Hank is truly loved by his family and friends. A Celebration of Life will be held on May 15, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Pacific Gateway Hotel, 3500 Cessna Drive, Richmond BC. For information: hankmcbride2017@gmail.com.
