Hugh Spencer Lister

September 16, 2003

Passed away September 16, 2003 at home with his family. Hugh was born to Frederick Spencer Lister KBE and Ruby May Lister (nee Johnstone) on May 21, 1925 in Forest Town, South Africa, the third child of four. Upon completion of his schooling, Hugh worked for the U.S. Office of War Information in Johannesburg during the second war. Hugh farmed for several years near Balfour, South Africa. His fascination with machinery and eye for detail led to a career as an insurance adjuster with expertise in heavy machinery claims. Hugh enjoyed telling stories of his formative experiences in the South African bushveldt, and captivated many listeners with these tales. We children are so thankful for such a wonderful father. Our sincere thanks to all his caregivers.

Hugh is survived by his sons Matthew and Spencer, their mother Joan, his sister Gillian Meyer, his grandson Graeme and daughter-in-law Patricia, his nieces Patricia Coombe and Valerie Thomas, his nephews Anthony Gear, David Gear, John Gear, Keith Lister, Robert Lister, Spencer Gear and their families.

A private memorial service is planned. Hugh was one of nature's gentlemen. His was a remarkable life.
