Our family is deeply saddened by the passing of Irma Strecker at Evergreen Terraces on June 29, 2020 at the age of 86.
She is survived by her five children, nine grandchildren, one great grandchild, one brother and one sister. She was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Jakob Strecker, who passed away in September 2019.
Born in the eastern part of Germany, her family was displaced after the war and after living through difficult post war years eventually immigrated to Southern Alberta in 1951 where they farmed the land.
She met her future husband at the local Baptist church in Lethbridge and they got married in 1953 and moved to Calgary. Irma found challenges and fulfilment in raising her five children. She was actively involved in church activities where she loved to serve others and felt this was her calling.
She had tremendous joy and satisfaction cooking and baking meals for others. Jake and Irma moved to the West Coast in 1995 and made many new friends in the church and community. Her beaming smile and gentle demeanour allowed her to befriend many. She loved gardening and spending time with her grandchildren.
She cherished visitors and trips back to Calgary. She will be remembered for her kindness, humility, and innocence. There were a few challenging years after she developed Alzheimer's, during which time her husband was her constant caregiver. She received tremendous personal and tender care from the staff at Evergreen Terraces
over the last 18 months of her life. A memorial service will be held at a later date, when pandemic conditions allow.
