MATHESON, John

One less grocer…John Alex Matheson was born to Angus & Fanny Matheson on September 23, 1924, a younger brother to Ella, Daniel, Bea and later an older brother to Ed. He passed away peacefully on Nov 20, 2016 surrounded by family. He was predeceased by his dear wife of 52 years, Dorothy. Left to mourn are his daughter, Sandi (Don) and grandchildren, Laura (J.P.), Matt (Valentina) and Jon; and son, Dave (Ava) and grandchildren Marsha & Jeff (Jill); and great-grandchildren Gabrielle, Jakob, Tristan and Amelia.

A long-time resident of Burnaby and Ocean Park, John was a lifelong grocer: first with his father at A. Matheson and Sons' Market in Burnaby and later at High-Low Foods and Buy-Low Foods. His hardworking and friendly manner offered a stellar example for co-workers and family. He was always on time, loyal and dependable.

After retirement, John focused on family, his neighbors and his volunteering at Peace Arch Hospital. He was very proud to have received a Fraser Health Above and Beyond award in 2014 in recognition of his volunteer efforts which can be viewed at: http://bit.ly/2fEFuFO

Like his mother, John loved to host family gatherings. He particularly cherished the weekend gatherings at his parents' camp in Boundary Bay and later at our camp at Crescent Beach. He was a kind and gentle man who was never fully content unless he was in the company of others or on the phone. His spirit will live on in all of those that had the pleasure to meet him.

A Celebration of his Life will take place on December 17 at Elgin Hall in South Surrey from 1:30 to 4:00. If you so wish, make a donation to a charity of your choice.
