THOMPSON, Laverne Alfred

died of natural causes in Surrey on Saturday, June 14, 2008. Vern was born in Haynes, Alberta on July 5, 1921, and grew up in Calgary. He joined the Canadian Navy in 1939, transferred to the Parachute Regiment, and was a prisoner of war from June 1944 to May 1945. He went to the University of British Columbia, and began work as a Customs Officer in 1949, retiring in 1981. He was very active in Scouts and the Photography Club, and travelled, fished and painted.

He was happily married to Kathleen (Boon) for 57 years. She, their two children, Sharleen and Kent, six grandchildren, Gil, Gwen, Struan, Dylan, Shona, and Jennifer, and two great grandchildren, William and Aliyah, all miss his artistry, gentle humour and love.

Funeral Service for Vern will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2008 at 2:30pm at Arbor Chapel, Valley View Memorial Gardens, 14660 72nd Ave., Surrey, with burial to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Vern's memory to a charity of one's choice would be greatly appreciated by the Thompson family.
