September 6, 1943 - September 25, 2023
One year ago, Ruth Mary Cannon (Morey) died peacefully in White Rock, B.C., surrounded by her loving children. She was 80 years old.
Born and raised in Dawson Creek, B.C. to Douglas and Mary Morey, Mom lived there with her 6 siblings until she met and married Alan Cannon. Together they left Dawson Creek to explore, first to Halifax, where Douglas was born, then back to B.C. where Sherri and David arrived. They lived in all corners of B.C. including Burnaby, Golden, Tahsis, and North Vancouver before settling in White Rock.
Mom was a daughter, sister, wife, and grandmother, but most of all she cherished being a mother. She found immense joy in her children's lives, offering them endless love, encouragement, and support. This continued with her six grandchildren (who can taste her Christmas gingerbread men just by thinking of them). This is her legacy - her love lives in the hearts of her family.
Her kindness, generosity, care, and thoughtfulness touched the lives of more than just family. Her presence in hockey rinks, baseball fields and field hockey pitches to cheer on her kids and their teammates exemplified her constant support of community sports. She excelled in her career as a front-line worker at Surrey Parks and Recreation where all the regular swimmers knew her smile and first timers were warmly welcomed.
Her later years were touched by dementia, but she was fortunate to be cared for in the remarkable Evergreen Baptist Care Facility in White Rock. Her children are deeply thankful for the amazing care she received there.
As her mind and body slowly transformed, her core remained intact: she spoke often of her amazing parents whose love for her was everlasting; despite dementia's progress she was soothed by those who showed her simple honest love; and there was always room for laughter - no matter what.
Ruth is predeceased by her sister Laura, and survived by her sister Lila (Case), her brothers Walter, Hubert, Patrick and David, her ex-husband, Alan, her kids Douglas, Sherri and David and her grandchildren Sophie, Benjamin, Tyler, Alexa, Cassandra and Julian. She will be deeply missed.
Mom's physical journey will conclude with a private celebration of life where she will rest alongside her parents in Dawson Creek on Wednesday September 25, 2024.
