It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of our beloved mum, Sheila Anne Thornycroft Macdonald (née Rhodes) on July 18, 2022 at Victoria Hospice.
Mum was born to Angela Alice Desiree Tremayne Harrison & Thomas Alfred Thornycroft Rhodes on Valentine's Day 1955.
A Valentine's baby she was, as she showered all of those around her with love and enjoyed gifting small expressions of her affection. Even into adulthood I would find little expressions of her love on the bedside table when I went to visit.
Mum became a registered nurse at Royal Columbian Hospital in 1977. She served for 43 years and retired only because her health inhibited her from continuing. She was dedicated to her community of South Surrey/White Rock and served there for 30 years. Mum spoke particularly fondly of the work she did in palliative community care where she held space for her patients as they transitioned from this life.
Mum had something magical about the way she made those around her feel. In her final days in hospice I lost track of the number of on and off duty staff members and volunteers who came to stand with her, place flowers beside her & hold her hand.
Mum was dealt more than her share of challenges on this earth, yet she never gave up on hope for a brighter future. She was a fighter to the very end, surviving seven months longer than expected, giving each of us seven more months in her loving presence.
May you finally be at peace: reunited with your beautiful mother, surrounded by your David Austin roses, doting on our beloved cats and dogs, and embraced by the Angels.
We are eternally grateful for the love and care of the staff and volunteers of Victoria Hospice: angels walking the earth. We are also grateful for the undying devotion and support of our dear Auntie Betty and Mum's dearest friend, Jennifer.
