Shirley Mae Wiebe (nee Jones)

Jun 9, 1935 – Jan 20, 2018
With sadness we announce the death of our Mom and grandmother, Shirley. She died in her sleep after a short battle with cancer.

She was predeceased by her husband John in 2009. Survived by son Gordon (Lisa Lachance) Nicole, Colleen, Christine and Matthew and son Tom (Barb) Vanessa, Paige and Jillian.

Mom was born and raised in Lethbridge, Alberta and later moved to Calgary where she met and married Dad on June 8, 1957. Gordon was born in 1958 followed by Tom in 1960. In 1972 we moved to South Surrey where Mom became very active in the community both at work and with her volunteer time. She worked at Ocean Park Post Office and Sears Catalogue Store. Her volunteer time was spent with groups including Peace Arch Hospital Auxiliary – Semiahmoo Group, Air Canada Dreams Take Flight, Crescent United Church Women’s group, and Japan-Canada Cultural Exchange program. We were proud of her volunteer work as she gave so freely of her time and self.

She was honoured to be Volunteer of the Year from the Surrey Leader in 2007. Mom’s greatest love was her family. She was a driving force within the Wiebe family in helping to establish a Wiebe family reunion In the late 1970’s which we continue to hold every three years. She adored her grandchildren and they her. They have many happy memories of camping in Birch Bay, cookie decorating and family dinners.

Shirley had a vast network of friends many of whom visited during her illness and we know she will be missed. She was a very proud member of the local Red Hat Group.

We are grateful for the love and support we all received.

We want to thank Peace Arch Hospital Hospice for their care and kindness to Mom during her stay there.

A Celebration of Life tea will be held at Peninsula United Church (Crescent United Church), 2756 127th Street, Surrey on February 3 at 2:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Peace Arch Hospital Auxiliary in Shirley’s name.
