The accident stats for Marine Drive in White Rock are in and they beckon a question or two for a quiet 30 km/h speed zone.
It would seem that the west end of Marine Drive from the 14600-block to the 14800-block notably has had some 31 insurance-reportable occurrences since the year 2000. This covering a span of some 11 years.
What this tells us is that this 30 km/h speed zone is extremely active, with some 2.8 accidents per year, or roughly an insurance-reportable crash every four months.
Are these accidents a reflection of the roadway design, or perhaps is speed a factor that requires better enforcement?
The White Rock RCMP provides outstanding service to our community and is not a point of contention.
One must wonder why, however, the extra resources afforded to other communities do not find their way to White Rock. I am referencing the likes of the Integrated Traffic Enforcement Unit, which receives considerable funding from ICBC.
It would be nice to see the occasional visit from them towards enforcement in high-crash zones such as the west end of Marine Drive.
