In her letter, the writer seems to imply that the removal of the British Crown as our Head of State would signify Canada’s departure from the British Commonwealth of Nations.

These are two distinct issues.

At the present, the head of the Commonwealth is Charles III. He is King of 15 member states (including Canada) while 36 other members are republics (which we could join if we abolish the British Crown as our Head of State) and five others have different monarchs.

So, let’s treat those as separate issues. I reiterate that now is time for Canada to move toward independence.

Why should Canada continue to be viewed as a vassal, a country in a subordinate position to another? Should Canada continue to rely on the Crown as a guardian of public peace and order, in return for our homage, fidelity and allegiance? It seems to me that medieval feudal times have long left us.

The time has come to ask our provincial and federal legislatures to have the courage to take a hard look, at the ultimate independence of our country.

As far as Canada’s membership in the Commonwealth, this matter should be the eventual subject of an in-depth cost/benefit analysis to make a learned decision.
