Re: Pier restaurant election issue, Aug. 22 letters.

While I agree with letter-writer Linda Peters about leaving the beautiful shoreline as natural as possible in White Rock, and I am also fed up with the amount of construction going on both at the beach and uptown, I think a restaurant/marina on the pier is a wonderful idea.

Most people will not recall there was a restaurant on the pier for years called the Dolphin Cafe. It was fabulous to be able to sit outside on their deck, or inside at a table and enjoy a meal seated over the water.

I can’t remember exactly what happened – perhaps some else can fill in the blanks – but I think it burned down in the early-’70s. (Editor’s note: See cutline above.)

Personally, I don’t think such an establishment with expanded marina facilities would be detrimental to the beach, but would add another level of interest and sophistication to the area, and be a tip of the hat to the original history of the pier. Sadly, it would mean another period of construction but, in the long run, it would be a lovely addition to the waterfront.
