LETTERS: Brilliant vision for Semiahmoo

An open letter to Surrey council. I support the Semiahmoo performing arts centre/tower proposal.

An open letter to Surrey council.

I support the Semiahmoo performing arts centre/tower proposal (Arts towers opponents out in force, Jan. 23).

What a creative concept.

As a twentysomething student – with a heavy study schedule, working part-time – I’d like to express my enthusiasm for the proposal, part of South Surrey’s exciting future.

We are living in a time when sustainability principles are a given in future development. Higher density is a way of being responsible with our land resources. In this case, it is a catalyst to obtain much-needed change that benefits all of us, including greater affordability.

When council adopted an Interim Land Use and Density Concept in May 2012, the wheels were set in motion to encourage high-quality urban design in Semiahmoo Town Centre. The amenity contribution of a theatre/gallery/café, in exchange for additional density, is brilliant.

This proposal could literally animate a barren lot, providing a great theatre, gallery and café for the extensive talent that already exists in South Surrey.

The potential to revitalize other businesses along 152 Street and encourage local shopping is a benefit to all. It’s also useful when people can live, shop and receive services in close proximity.

I am all for positive change and believe the ‘art tower’ could breathe new life into our community.
