LETTERS: Child’s handrail all that’s missing from otherwise lovely Memorial Park

My family and I were extremely excited to finally visit the long awaited Memorial Park renovation in White Rock. We had an opportunity on May 23 and were not disappointed.

Although the bathrooms remain closed, overall the park looks fantastic. It was a sunny day and numerous people were enjoying the grass and benches. My two-year-old son was particularly engaged with the water feature. However, we couldn’t help but notice that all of the railings beside the staircases are missing a mid-rail?

My son can walk just fine but he is only learning how to use steps and usually requires something to hold onto as he climbs around. Why no mid hand rail? My assumption would be that during any kind of planning or consultation, someone should have identified that children or anyone less than five feet tall need something to hang onto when travelling up or down stairs.

That’s why they are required at schools, and other facilities where children visit. I’d hate to see a child take a spill. Perhaps they will be installed at a later date.
