Re: Horrifying history June 3 editorial

The final sentence, “Canada’s historical racism towards indigenous people …” overlooks the fact that racism is present today with dire consequences for the First Nations still among us. For example, our use of the Semiahmoo name for our malls, schools etc., while denying the SFN potable water.

We shed tears on prompt, have perfected apologies, lower flags.

But we stall when it comes to addressing our ongoing practices that limit indigenous people. We neither ask for nor listen to real ways of providing paths to health and prosperity, because these “real ways” will cost us: financial costs, land costs, privilege costs.

It’s past time to make reconciliation more than a word.
