The first explosive night Diwali celebrations was a nightmare for many of us.

The fireworks were exploding all around us non-stop from dusk right up until 1:30 a.m.

It was impossible to fall asleep and when we finally were able to drop off around 2 a.m., we were woken up again at 3:30 a.m. with another round of loud explosions.

This is unacceptable.

We do support freedom of expression of every belief system in our city and country, but when the level of celebrating starts to infringe on the rights of those also living within the chosen areas of said celebrations, then it becomes annoying and unacceptable.

There is a noise bylaw which has been enacted to respect the well-being of all people who live in this fine city of ours. It stipulates an 11 p.m. deadline for noise.

I question why the city adopted a bylaw and why, since that bylaw was enacted, we have witnessed a substantial increase in the use of tectonics.

They also seem much louder now and are fired off much later into the early-morning hours.

And what about the impact on our wild bird populations?

Just imagine what the noise is doing to our little friends up in the trees.
