Re: B.C.-funded policing referendum might clear logjam, June 1 opinion

Frank Bucholtz is correct that a binding police referendum is needed to solve this intractable conflict. It has indeed dragged on too long. Our SPS and RCMP officers and families deserve clarity about their futures.

Why do the provincial NDP seem reluctant to let us choose? As Bucholtz notes, it was after all a referendum in 1950 that gave us the Surrey RCMP, replacing our Surrey municipal force.

If Surrey residents are not allowed a choice by Mayor Locke and the NDP government, we will remember this in the next mayoralty and provincial elections.

Bucholtz is right that the decision should be in the hands of voters, not politicians. Only a referendum can rescue us from this political swamp.
