Whether you are for or against oil pipelines, the protests that are blocking Delta Port and Westshore terminals are having a positive residual effect on another sinister climate crime.

Since Sunday morning, BNSF trains carrying U.S. thermal coal have not been rumbling through White Rock, Crescent Beach and Delta on their way to the port.

This means that, for now, the huge freighters that carry the coal through the Salish Sea en route to Asia cannot be loaded. The burning of dirty U.S. thermal coal is the most significant climate crime of all.

Thank you to the protesters for fortuitously blocking Canada from enabling this environmentally harmful practice to take place, if only for a little while.
