Editor:

If the federal government is going to give money and tax credits to the media industry in Canada, it should also put regulations in place, such as:

• Media organizations must belong to a professional association of journalists where citizens can file complaints and seek remedy for harm.

• All writers, reporters and journalists must abide by a code of ethics and be educated with basic journalistic standards and fair, balanced reporting.

• The editorial board of each media organization must be separate from the publisher and advertisers influence and independent of bias.

• Media organizations must donate a certain percentage of their profits via free or low-cost advertising space for non-profits, charities and groups who otherwise could not afford to pay private market rates to advertise.
