Recently, I decided to take my granddaughter to the beach to see the sea life. We could look in tide pools for crabs and see the starfish on the rocks. Then my son told me there were no longer any starfish. I didn’t believe it. After all, I live by the beach here in White Rock, I was sure I would have noticed.
But, apparently not!
A quick Google search and you see the headline, Mysterious Disease Turning Sea Stars to Goo May Disrupt Tidal Ecosystems. In November 2013, the news coming out was about hundreds of starfish that had turned into limp lumps of goo along both the East and West coasts. Now, the news is that 95 per cent of the starfish have disappeared.
Walk down the pier; look at the rocks and on the pylons. Hopefully you can find a starfish, I could not. I hope this is temporary. I’d hate to say to my grandchildren, “I remember when…”?
