This is a warning to all driver to slow down when driving the perimeter of Sunnyside Acres Urban Forest.

This area houses a number of wildlife species, one of which is a small herd of black-tailed deer.

On Tuesday, Nov. 7, the second fawn of this herd was discovered dead at the pull out on 24 Avenue near the entrance to Softball City.

The impact to the car when this deer was struck and killed must have caused a fair amount of damage to the vehicle; the driver is now likely having to deal with insurance companies and repairs; something that can be time consuming, frustrating, costly and emotionally upsetting.

Surrey parks and recreation have installed deer-crossing signage which are, for the most part, ignored by speeding drivers. Some of the other species living within the acreage – coyotes, raccoons, possum and the least likely critter one would want to hit, skunk – are not only losing their lives but habitat and food through human encroachment.

As stewards of this urban jewel, let’s not have another creature killed on our conscience. Please slow down, and check the ditch areas when driving around the forest, because that is where deer will stand before jumping out onto the road.
