Re: Half of Surrey’s youth happy to live here, Nov. 6.

Many thanks to the SurreyCares Foundation for their Youth Vital Signs report.

I’ve been teaching at Kwantlen for years, so it was no surprise to me that many respondents said more funding was needed for post-secondary education in Surrey.

We’ve been shortchanged in this area for decades. As the Vital Signs report notes, for every 100 18- to 24-year-olds in our region, our local post-secondaries get funding for 12.7 seats – one-quarter of the 48.7 seats the rest of the province gets.

If we really want the future to live here – if we really want a vital Surrey – we’ve got to fix this.
