When I saw the lower than expected increase in my city taxes for the coming year, I thought back over what’s been happening in White Rock since the new mayor and council took over.

As one who came here in 1974 and learned something of our city’s history through the museum and archives, I’m happy this is my home. I’m glad to see our affairs are in such good hands. We have not read about things being done behind the mayor’s back and, unless the media are missing something, councillors are working together smoothly.

Staff costs have been cut and so far there has been no waste of money on consultations, at least one of which made us a laughing stock among other municipalities in the past.

After two years of neighbours complaining about a vermin-infested house and yard, that problem has now been dealt with efficiently. These are just a few items which come to mind.

This council has been in charge for just six months, which is normally considered the ‘honeymoon period’ for politicians, but I shall be surprised if things change. We know there are still many problems to be dealt with, but I am confident that Mayor Wayne Baldwin and council will continue to cope well.

They all deserve our thanks.
