BC fares well on rugby sevens pitch

Provincial U18 sides – each of which have Surrey players – finish first, second at Las Vegas High School Invitational Sevens

Local youth rugby players returned from Nevada this week with medals, after Team BC fared well at the prestigious Las Vegas High School Invitational Sevens tournament.

The provincial U18 women’s team – which counted Clayton Heights’ Chantal McLean among its ranks – lost just one match during the tournament – losing to Atlantis in pool play – en route to a gold medal.

Team BC went 2-1 prior to playoff rounds – with lopsided shutout wins over Ontario and a U.S. club called Swarm.

In the finals, BC against faced U.S.-based Atlantis, beating the previously undefeated club 32-10.

Team BC’s under-18 boys team also advanced to the championship game of the sevens tourney, but settled for silver medals after being edged 19-14 by a team of US All-Americans.

A handful of Bayside Rugby players were part of the Team BC U18 program, including Joseph Carter, Nick Collett, Nico Docolas, Matt Gallagher, Cali Martinez and Andrew O’Connor.
