The Valley West Hawks took three of a possible four points from the Cariboo Cougars last weekend at the Langley Sportsplex.

The BC Hockey Major Midget League team upended the Cougars 5-3 Saturday afternoon, then came from behind for a 1-1 Sunday morning.

Sunday’s tie was the first of the season for the Hawks, who are in third place in the 11-team provincial league with a 15-6-1 (won-lost-tied) record.

Saturday’s game was tied 1-1 after 20 minutes, with Eric Callegari of Langley scoring for the home side. The teams exchanged goals again in the second frame, with Cloverdale’s Jordan Funk netting the Hawks goal.

The Cougars went up 3-2 with eight minutes remaining in the game, but Valley West responded the three unanswered goals in the final seven minutes of play. Matt Bradley of Surrey tied the game, then Paul Savage added the winning tally with two minutes to go. Savage, from Surrey, scored again a minute later into the empty net.

Bradley added a pair of assists to his goal for a three-point game.

Cariboo led to most of Sunday’s game, taking the lead 11 minutes into the game and maintaining the 1-0 lead for 34 minutes. A goal from Ty Westgard   of White Rock with five minutes to play allowed the Hawks to earn the tie.

Now six points back of the first-place Okanagan Rockets (18-3-1), the Hawks will visit the Rockets next weekend for a two-game series Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.
