Sometimes giving up a little can mean getting a lot more back.
No one knows that better than members of the Semiahmoo Midget A1 Ravens who shaved their heads Friday night to show their support for assistant coach Kellan Thompson’s wife, Torrie, who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer.
The boys parted with their locks to raise more than $1,433 for charity, then added another $800 at their game Saturday night when they hosted a 50/50 draw.
“The winner of the draw generously donated their winnings,” said Ravens’ spokesperson Connor Wong. “In three days, we came up with more than $2,200 for coach Kellen and his wife, Torrie, to donate to the charity of their choice.”
The team came up with the idea after finding out about Torrie’s diagnosis and shared their plan with Ravens head coach Scott May.
“It caught me off guard,” May said. “But it is who they are. It just goes to show you how considerate and thoughtful the team is and how close they are. We find strength within each other, and this is a great testament of that.”
Wong said another highlight of the night was stepping out onto the ice and seeing the right side of South Surrey arena almost completely full of family and friends supporting the fundraiser and the team to their 7-1 win over Port Coquitlam.
“At the end of the game, we saluted the crowd and showed off our newly shaved heads,” Wong said. “This was by far one of the most memorable nights of my life, and I speak on behalf of the rest of the team who made this happen.
“I am so proud of my teammates, that we could do something so big and support someone very close to us.”
