A golf tournament held last month at Nico Wynd Golf Course raised $24,000 for Special Olympics BC.

The event, held July 27, was hosted by Crescent Beach residents Norma and Brian Eaton, who were inspired to put together the fundraiser after meeting 27-year-old Michaela Robinson, a South Surrey Special Olympian who competes in figure skating, gymnastics, swimming and bowling.

"We just realized what a wonderful young girl she is… she just touched our hearts," Norma Eaton said.

"And you realize that for many of these kids, the Special Olympics are their whole lives, so we wanted to help."

The event, which also included dinner, and live and silent auctions, was supported by more than 70 businesses, Eaton said. Proceeds will help Special Olympics BC with facility rental costs  – including pools and arenas – as well as help fund new equipment and travel costs for the athletes.

"Everyone really rallied behind it, and it was a lovely day. So much fun," said Eaton, adding that 80 golfers took part in the event.
