Another Surrey school has qualified for the Senior Boys 4A Provincial High School Basketball Championships.
The Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers topped the Pinetree Timberwolves 94-69 yesterday (Thursday) at the Langley Events Centre (LEC), assuring themselves of a top-seven finish at the Fraser Valley zone tournament.
The Panthers, seeded seventh for the 24-team playoff tournament, will play the sixth-seed Yale Lions Sunday evening at 6 p.m. at the LEC in a game to determine fifth and sixth place.
Yale clinched their place at the provincial tournament with a 90-82 win over the Tamanawis Wildcats in the second of four games played yesterday in Langley.
Tamanawis, seeded fourth for the Fraser Valley tournament, has one more chance to qualify for the provincial championships. They play Pinetree at 6 p.m. Sunday evening for seventh place, and the final Fraser Valley berth to the B.C. championships.
The other two games played Thursday featured the first four teams to qualify for the provincials out of the Fraser Valley, including two from Surrey tipping off in one of two semifinal games.
The second-seed Holy Cross Crusaders got past the third-seed Semiahmoo Totems 69-55 to advance to Sunday's Fraser Valley championship game at 7:45 p.m. at the LEC. The top-seed Walnut Grove Gators topped the fifth-seed W.J. Mouat Hawks 97-62 in the other semifinal.
Semiahmoo and Mouat will play for third place at 6 p.m. Sunday evening.
