An all-Surrey semifinal at the B.C. Senior 3A Girls high school basketball tournament is set for Friday afternoon in Langley.

The Panorama Ridge Thunder, seeded fifth, surprised the fourth-seed Walnut Grove Gators 85-70 in a quarterfinal game Thursday afternoon at the Langley Events Centre (LEC). Savannah Dhaliwal had 46 points to lead the Thunder into the final four.

Less than two hours later, the eight-seed Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers upset the top-seed Oak Bay Breakers 81-78. Oak Bay was unbeaten in 28 games before Thursday’s quarterfinal game. But 35 points from Shelvin Grewal and another 33 from Maryn Budiman powered the Panthers to the win.

The Thunder and Panthers will clash at 3:30 p.m. Friday in a rematch of the Surrey Firefighters Classic final in January. Panorama Ridge won the all-Surrey tournament 76-71 at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary.

The other semifinal at the provincial tournament also features two teams from the Fraser Valley, as the Brookswood Bobcats tip-off against the Abbotsford Panthers at 5:15 p.m.

Teams from Panorama Ridge and Lord Tweedsmuir went head-to-head in a quarterfinal game in the Junior Girls provincial tournament, also underway at the LEC.

The 13-seed Panthers won 49-42 to advance to a semifinal game against the top-seed Kelowna Owls at 6:30 p.m. tonight (Friday).

Panorama Ridge, seeded 12th for the tournament, dropped into the consolation bracket and will play the nine-seed Seycove Seahawks at 9:30 a.m.
