Some of the top high-school volleyball players from across the province will be in South Surrey this weekend, taking part in the annual Peace Arch News Classic.
The senior girls tournament is set to hit local courts Friday and Saturday, and will feature a number of top-ranked sides – including the host Semiahmoo Totems, currently the No. 2-ranked quad-A team in B.C.
The 21-team tournament begins Friday afternoon at Semiahmoo and Elgin Park secondaries. The playoff rounds and championship game are set for Saturday at Semiahmoo.
Local teams have fared well at the popular tournament in recent years.
Last year’s 15-team PAN Classic was an all-Surrey final, won by Surrey’s Holy Cross Crusaders, who upset the higher-ranked Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers of Cloverdale.
And in 2014, the Elgin Park Orcas claimed top spot, knocking off Lambrick Park in the title game. Elgin Park finished third last year, rebounding from a semifinal loss to the eventual champs to win the bronze-medal match against Langley’s Walnut Grove Gators.
