The Peace Arch Rangers are Coastal Cup champions, after a 2-1 victory – which was decided by penalty kicks – over the Comox Valley Red Strike Sunday at Richmond’s Minoru Park.

The Rangers took a 1-0 into halftime against Comox, but the Island squad tied the game in the second half on a penalty shot.

Late in the game, Peace Arch appeared to have taken a late lead, but the goal was disallowed by an offside call. From there, the two teams slugged it out in a pair of overtime periods, with neither able to break the deadlock.

In the shootout, the Rangers scored on four of five shots, while the Red Strike only scored twice.

Peace Arch’s Nick Di Lello was named player of the game.

The win was the Rangers’ second cup title of the year; they also captured the District Cup earlier this season with a win over fellow Peace Archers, the U13 Titans.

The Rangers will also compete at provincials later this year.

The Peninsula’s other Coastal Cup entry, the Semiahmoo Thunder, lost their U16 girls A division championship match 3-2 to the Richmond Red Hot Selects; the game was also decided on penalty kicks.

In total, 22 Coastal Cup finals were played on the weekend, all in Richmond.
