The Semiahmoo Totems junior boys basketball team is headed to the provincials for the first time in more than a decade.

The team Grade 9-10 players qualified for the B.C. tournament after placing fourth at Fraser Valley championships last weekend at Walnut Grove Secondary; the top five teams made the cut.

“I’ve been here 12 years, and this is the first time we’ve made it,” said head coach Paul Langton.

“We’re really excited – we have a great group of guys, and we’ve had a very good year.”

It was Walnut Grove’s squad that kept the Totems off the podium, as the Gators edged Semiahmoo 59-50 in the bronze-medal game Saturday.

Semiahmoo was bounced into the bronze-medal game after losing a semifinal tilt Friday, 63-56 against Heritage Woods.

In quarter-finals Feb. 21, Semi defeated the Tamanawis Wildcats 47-44. Earlier in the week, the Totems also earned a second-round victory over the Terry Fox Ravens, 68-41; and a 68-21 win over Langley Fundamental School in the opening round.

The Pitt Meadows Marauders won the tournament, beating Heritage Woods, 48-46 in overtime.

The Telus Junior Boys Basketball Provincial Championships are slated for March 6-9 at Vancouver College.
