Semiahmoo swimmers score medals at masters meet

It was a good weekend in the water for the Semiahmoo Masters Swim Club, at provincials in Vancouver.

It was a good weekend in the water for the Semiahmoo Masters Swim Club recently, as the group placed first in the “small team” division at provincial masters swim championships in Vancouver.

The meet, held in late April, was highlighted by Semiahmoo’s Danica Stockstad, who set a new provincial record in the 400-m individual medley, clocking a gold-medal winning time of five minutes, 50.46 seconds.

Stockstad also placed first in the 50-m backstroke, 50-, 100-, 200- and 400-m freestyle swims and the 100-m IM.

Others to find the podium included Robyn Sawyer, who won silver in 50- and 100-m back and 50-m butterfly, and bronze in the 100-m back; Bonnie Hartney, who was second in 50-m breaststroke and third in two other events; Heike Beer, first in 50- and 100-m back; Craig Slater, first in three backstroke distances, second in 50-m fly and 200-m IM and third in the 100-m IM; and Anne-Lynn Stockstad, second in 50-m fly and third in 200-m free. Rounding out the medal-winners was  Dale Freeman, who took top spot in two events – the 200- and 400-m IM –won silver in the 100-m back and 100-m fly and won bronze in the 400-m free and 100-m IM.

Another Semiamhoo swimmer, Aart Looyes, had to withdrew from the meet after suffering a torn bicep muscle in his first event, the 50-m backstroke, in which he still finished third.

Three Semi relay teams also made the podium – the women’s 4x50 free team won gold, while the women’s 4x50 medley and the mixed medley teams won bronze.
