A pair of South Surrey ringette players returned home from Winnipeg last week with medals around their necks, after a silver-medal finish at Western Canadian Ringette Championships.

Goaltender Jayden Sawada and team captain Grace Kemp, who plays centre, were both members of Team BC, which placed second at the tournament.

The British Columbia squad lost the championship game 5-4 to Alberta. The B.C. squad never trailed in the game until the final two minutes when, with the score knotted at 4-4, the Albertans scored the eventual winning goal.

Kemp had an assist on Team BC’s first goal, and finished the tournament with two goals and two assists in six games.

After the tournament, teammate Kiandra Gustavson, a Langley resident, was named to the all-star team.

Both players are members of the Lower Mainland Ringette League’s Thunder U14 AA team, which was selected to represent B.C. after winning AA provincials in late February.

Prior to the gold-medal game, the B.C. team faced another Alberta team, from Spruce Grove, in the semifinal and won 5-4.

The team was second in Pool B after round-robin play, and also earned wins over St. Alberta (Alberta), Eastman (Manitoba) and Saskatoon (Saskatchewan).
