Groenewegen, a national fastpitch champion with the White Rock Renegades and also a former athlete of the year at Elgin Park Secondary, read the pledge aloud during opening ceremonies Saturday.

In addition to Groenewegen, Surrey volleyball player Nick Del Bianco carried the British Columbia flag during the opening ceremonies.
