South Surrey hockey player wins Bure Award

Keira Wong, 12, recognized for "exceptional character, sportsmanship and leadership.”

A former member of Semiahmoo Minor Hockey Association has a prestigious award to add to her collection.

Keira Wong – who plays this year with the Surrey Female Hockey Association – was honoured in October with the Pavel Bure Award, given annually by the Vancouver Canucks and BC Hockey.

Wong, who captained Semiahmoo’s peewee C4 Vipers last season – when she was nominated for the award by coaches and the association’s then-president Ian Maguire – “has shown exceptional character, sportsmanship and leadership.”

Wong, 12, is to receive her award at Rogers Arena Dec. 18, during the Canucks game against the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets.

Wong’s coaches from last season – Ken Kobylanski, Kelly French and Troy Anderson – described the young hockey player as “a passionate leader” whose “infectious, positive attitude made the hockey games fun.”

Off the ice, Wong’s list of credentials is equally as strong. She’s an avid softball and soccer player – with the White Rock Renegades and Coastal FC, respectively – and is also in her fourth year with the Girl Guides; in June, she received the Lady Baden Powell Challenge distinction, one of guiding’s top honours.

Last summer, she also donated 13 inches of hair to BC Children’s hospital’s Wigs for Kids program, and has also taken part in other local fundraisers and community efforts, including volunteering to  sell poppies for Remembrance Day.
