Coming off a fourth-place showing at the Surrey RCMP Basketball Classic earlier this month – the best-ever placing for the school – the Southridge Storm senior boys hoops team continued their hot streak Thursday with a 80-60 win over Langley’s R.E. Mountain Eagles.
The win boosted Southridge’s Fraser Valley league record to 3-0; they’re 9-8 overall, including tournament and exhibition games. They’re currently No. 10 in B.C. AA rankings.
Thursday’s win was much tighter than the 20-point margin of victory showed, Southridge coach Steve Anderson said.
“The score was not indicative of how close this game really was,” he said. “Mountain played hard and with a lot of emotion.”
Southridge trailed the Eagles at halftime and didn’t begin to mount a comeback until late in the third quarter.
“The difference was defensive intensity, rebounding and transition game,” Anderson said.
Shahbaj Dhillon led the Storm with 13 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks, while guard Jonathan Yu had 13 points, seven rebounds, nine steals and two assists.
Ben Severide and Won Mo Koo each had 12 points in the win, and Justin Bhuttar chipped in with 11 points and five boards.
The Storm are back on the court Tuesday when they play Aldergrove. The game begins at 8 p.m. at Southridge.
