Sportability brings Power Soccer to Surrey

Provincial championship tournament at Cloverdale Rec Centre

The Cloverdale Recreation Centre will host the B.C. Power Soccer Provincial Championship this weekend.

The four-team tournament features athletes from B.C. and Alberta, including six (Vanessa Chen, Ana Lu, Diane Lu, Dale McLeod, Ian Wright and Lareina Yung) who will compete in the Power Soccer World Cup in Florida July 5-9.

Sportability, an organization which also offers programs in sledge hockey, boccia and seven-a-side soccer for disabled athletes, describes power soccer as “an adapted version of able-bodied soccer, where athletes try to maneuver an oversized soccer ball across the gym using an electric wheelchair aiming to score goals on the opposing team.”

Power soccer athletes can have a wide range of disabilities, including cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy. “The adaptive nature of Power soccer allows for athletes to develop fundamental movement skills and participate in sports in a team environment,” noted a Sportability press release.

“We are very excited to host a fun, competitive tournament in Cloverdale,” said Jade Werger, Sportability’s Sport Development Coordinator. “This is the time where our power soccer athletes from around B.C. and Alberta gather to compete against each other’s clubs.”
