Seven wins in nine games left the Surrey Storm ’99 with a bronze medal last week at the Softball Canada under-14 Girls Fastpitch Jamboree in Montreal.

The Storm, winners of a bronze medal at the provincial championships in July, won all five games in round robin play.

Their first game was a 1-0 win over the Pickering Heat. Shaina Eyre and Emma McMillan shared the pitching duties to shutout the Ontario team. The game’s only run came when Tayler Janower tripled then scored on a single by Eyre.

The Storm won twice on Thursday, defeating the Mississauga North Tigers 5-2 then topping the host Quebec Rebelles 9-1. The Storm then blanked the Smitty’s Terminators of Manitoba 7-0 Friday morning, before edging the Windsor Wildcats 1-0 in eight innings to clinch top spot in their group.

The pitching of Eyre and McMillan kept the Wildcats off the scoreboard, while sacrifice bunts by Megan Parno and Taylor Kendrick allowed Sadie Stoppler to score the winning run.

Surrey was handed its first loss of the tournament in the first game of the double knockout playoff, a 10-6 loss to the Guelph Gators Saturday morning. Strong efforts at the plate by Parno, Mackenzie Brown, Stoppler, Janower, Janelle Loewen, Lindsey Cowdell and Lauren Andrews the Storm to a 7-2 victory over the Brampton Blazers in the afternoon.

Playing their third contest of the day on Saturday evening, pitchers Eyre and McMillan again combined for a shutout in a 2-0 victory over the Waterloo Gold, clinching a bronze medal.

With a chance to play for gold later in the day, the Storm were eliminated 9-3 Sunday morning by Pickering despite a strong defensive effort from Hannah Boulanger.

Janelle Loewen was solid for the Storm behind the plate, catching for the all nine games in the tournament.
