A handful of Semiahmoo Peninsula and Cloverdale track stars reached new heights last month at 2012 Legion Canadian Youth Championships in PEI.
Leading the pack was Elgin Park Secondary’s Jake Hanna, who won three medals – one of every colour – after winning gold in the 300-m, silver in the 200-m hurdles and bronze in the 200-m. In the 300-m race, Hanna’s gold-medal run of 35.49 seconds also set a Legion U16 record.
Fellow Ocean Athletics hurdler Sebastian Adugalski also broke a Legion record in Charlottetown, after clocking a time of 38.38 seconds in the U18 boys 300-m hurdles, in which he won silver. The gold medallist, Saskatchewana’s Kieran Johnston, set the new Legion mark, eight one-hundredths of a second quicker than Adugalski.
Cloverdale’s Ben Ingvaldson also found himself on the podium at Legions, which ran Aug. 17-19. The Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary student took bronze in the U18 boys hammer throw, with a toss of 55.95 m. He also competed in the discus and shotput events.
Hanna, Adugalski and Meghan Palesch also took home relay medals, while Palesch won the ‘B’ final in the 100-m hurdles. She was also fifth in 300-m hurdles.
Rounding out the local contingent was Max Hanna, competing for the Langley Mustangs Track Club.
Hanna, older brother to Jake, won gold in the U18 boys javelin, with a toss of 58.36 m – two metres clear of the silver medallist.
